The School of Foreign Languages (SFL) of Tianjin University of Technology was founded in 1979, with English and Japanese language specialties for bachelors. Since then, on the basis of Business studies in English and Japanese, it has been striving to cultivate comprehensive talents with good command of both English and Japanese language and also to develop comprehensive and applicable English language learning programs. From 2000, it began to offer fivemaster degree programs one after another, i.e. English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature，Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics，Translation and Interpreting.
SFL now includes such teaching units as English Department, Japanese Department and College English Teaching Department and some research institutes such as Institute of Chinese American Studies, Institute of Children’s Literature Studies, Institute of English Language Studies,Institute of Applied Translation Studies, Literary Translation Center for International children and adolescents,Institute of Sino-Japanese Cultural Studies,Institute of Sino-Japanese Relations, and Tianjin Research Center on International Education Policies.
SFL is now the member of Tianjin Municipal Teaching Guiding Committee for College Foreign Language Non-Majors,Tianjin Linguistics Association, Tianjin International Comparative Education Society, Tianjin Association of World Literature and Comparative Literature, Tianjin Translation Association, andTranslations,a magazine of foreign literature.
SFL is actively conducting international exchanges and cooperation and has set up stable cooperative and communicative fellowship with such institutions as McMaster University (Canada), University of Hertfordshire (Britain), Swansea University(Britain),Educational Services Exchange with China’Inc (America), University of AppliedSciences of Magdeburg (Germany), The University of Ballarat (Astralia), International Pacific College (New Zealand), Osaka Sangyo University (Japan), Reitaku University(Japan), Hagomoro University of International Studies(Japan), and Kansai Gaidai University(Japan).
